If you are Chinese, then you probably have heard of this tradition. It is the "Chinese proposal", but back in the old days, it was the parents who decide which family to marry into. Therefore, the parents from the groom's side would bring gifts and money to give to the bride's side of the family as a gesture of wanting their daughter's hand. If the bride's side of the family accepts the proposal, then they return half of the gifts back to the groom's side and the decision is made.
Of course, now in the new days, it's all about the size of the ring! (haha...okay fine, it's not :P)
We decided to do this because we wanted to be traditional, but we scrapped a lot of the tradition of buying a whole roasted pig, the coconuts, and having a "mui yan por" to bring the gifts over, etc...
So we asked our bestman and maid of honour to help out. Our bestman Patrick helped Yusuf bring the gifts over and our maid of honour Adrian stayed in our house to wait for them to arrive. When they arrived, we moved all the gifts in and started to take some photos. We then decided what needed to be returned back to Yusuf's family.
The whole process took maybe around 30-45 minutes? We all then went out for dinner with both sides of the family. It was quite a fun experience!
Here are some pictures.
